ABSTRACT Addition and multiplication have a spesial significance in VLSI design because there are many applications require these basic operations. In this paper, we study the effect of adder inversion property to the performance of 4-bit ripple carry adder (RCA). The 1-bit static complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) adder is used to build the 4-bit adder. Layout for 1-bit adder was designed and simulated with Electric 8.08 software and the delay time was observed. Next, the layout for 4-bit original RCA and 4-bit RCA which exploit the inversion property were designed and the 4-bit adders performance were observed. The simulation results show that 4-bit RCA which exploit the adder inversion property has 80% shorter delay time than the 4-bit original RCA.
