Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of readiness of professional/vocational tertiary institutions, especially the Politeknik Negeri Jakarta with the form and strategy and innovation capacity applied. Innovation itself is a combination of new ideas, changes and is a process for organizations to create and define problems and activities to develop new knowledge on existing problems. The limitation of previous empirical studies is that they have not integrated the factors of leadership, organizational structure, and service orientation as determinants that influence innovation. Based on this, this study attempts to describe innovation in professional/vocational tertiary institutions through the factors of leadership, organizational structure, and service orientation and analyzes the model of the relationship between leadership, structure and service orientation. Referring to the theoretical perspective, the nature of this research includes explanatory research, which relies on a hypothetical-deductive method with a quantitative approach. The try out method was used in this study with data obtained through one-time data collection (withdrawal of a questionnaire). Data analysis is quantitative statistics. The results showed that there was a significant influence of leadership on innovation, but no significant effect on organizational structure and service orientation. The second variable was found to have no significant effect on innovation. The centralization of authority in terms of work and decision-making reinforces the view that organizations are seen as mechanistic types of organizations. Referring to these findings, factors that are considered to have no positive influence on innovation need to be reviewed and rearranged in the future so that the organization is encouraged to become an organic organization through an even distribution of strengths and abilities among members.
